Vaughn De Leath with Ben Selvin’s Orchestra – I Can’t Give You Anything But Love – 1928

A 1928 song from Jimmy McHugh (music) & Dorothy Fields (lyrics). The immortal line “Diamond bracelets Woolworths doesn’t sell, Baby” has become a sad irony: now they don’t even sell Pick ‘n’ Mix!

Woolies will never be gone while my garden exists – most of the plants were from Woolies in High Wycombe. This must apply to a lot of gardens. I feel sorry for the staff – I can still imagine them behind the doors there.

The US ambassador’s house in London – Winfield House – was the gift of a member of the Woolworth family – it is a classical mansion in Regents Park and could be in Gloucestershire except the Post Office Tower is visible on the horizon.

Wonderful song, thanks for posting it. Such a shame Woolworths have gone after more than 100 years. Young Americans don’t appear to have heard of them.

I saw the item on the news. I think the store is called “Wellworth”. Well, I wish them well!

    Great posting.
You are right about the irony, but I see an ex Woolworths’s store has opened in Dorchester ( I think), and the old folks were queuing up to buy “pick & Mix”.
    Thanks for sharing.
