Part 6. shirleybassey.wordpress.com About the dress Dame Shirley is wearing for this performance (from Ian): This gown was designed by Sara Perceval around 1983, Sara did all of the lace chiffon gowns for DSB in the 90′s. We call it the Cockeral Gown for obvious reasons. The gown was worn at Blazers in London in 1984, on British tv in 1987 and in Berlin in 1987 and several other occasions in the late 80′s. It was sadly destroyed in a fire in the early 90′s! Send In The Clowns Written by Stephen Sondheim. Released on the 1975 album Good, Bad But Beautiful. Another recording not quite as good as the original is on the 1984 album I Am What I Am. Live recordings have been released on the album Live In Japan ’77, and on the videoYou Ain’t Heard Nothing Yet. Additionally Shirley Bassey has performed this song live in some TV shows 1975/76, and again in the 1980′s. Stephen Sondheim (born 1930) is a Broadway show composer and lyricist, described not only as the greatest of his generation but as the only great one of his generation. He’s well known and loved for his quite complicated and not so accessible, but beautiful writing. He got his first big break when he was hired to write lyrics to Leonard Bernstein’s score for “West Side Story”. Shirley Bassey has performed songs also from other Sondheim musicals: “West Side Story” (1957), “Gypsy” (1959) and “Follies” (1971). “Send in the Clowns” has been performed by many
