Guys, don’t loose the romance factor when buying a diamond engagement ring; surprise her!

November 20th, 2009

Hello all, Kerry Ryan Here!

Random diamond thoughts…

When buying a diamond engagement ring guys don’t lose the romance factor, surprise her! It is commendable and rewarding. If a surprise is not in order then get engaged somewhere cool, you’ll create a memory for life trust me I’ve got one.

Looking for the right jeweler, trust your inner instincts, most people don’t like pushy people, why would you want a pushy jeweler?

Stress stinks when buying diamonds and/or diamond jewelry, to lower the stress factor one way is by creating a budget and sticking to it make the jeweler work for you not the other way around. If you know what you want to spend that’s half the battle, trust me it will keep the blood pressure lower.

Diamond gift ideas; pick something she doesn’t have. Do a mental inventory:

Ears – Diamond studs perhaps diamond earrings Wrist – Diamond bracelet or a diamond bangle Fingers- God gave them 10 so after the engagement ring there are many more options: diamond band, sapphire and diamond ring, etc

It’s October, if you go to the local malls they are already decorating for Christmas, what I’m advocating is that it’s been a tough year, don’t you think that special person in your life deserves something special? If your answer is yes now is a good time to firm up the planning, trust me on this one.

If you’re sitting on the fence it’s time to jump off, there is nothing more fulfilling in life then a well grounded relationship, one that is full of love and understanding. It took me awhile to figure it out but even the blind squirrel finds an acorn

Well that’s enough for today, more to follow…

Have a great day!

A Loose History of Fashion Jewelry

October 19th, 2009

Probably the first time fashion jewelry appeared was in the early 1700s. That was the era of glass blowing. Once the method of making different shapes from glass was perfected, it was just a matter of time before someone came up with the idea of using the technique to make jewelry. Starting with earrings (which only real skilled artisans could blow ? and they were pretty costly owing to that) and moving on to pendants, glass became the material of choice in the manufacture of fashion jewelry.
Let?s pause here and go further back in time, we all know that the concept of jewelry itself is almost as old as the history of man. All through the early man phase, people have been using items as unique as bones and teeth to decorate their bodies; but we will not consider them as fashion jewelry as it was not intended that way! After gold and diamonds started ruling the roost, jewelers have always been on the lookout for something more economical so that everyone could afford studded jewelry. Thus came the concept of semi precious metals and stones.

Diamond prospectors from across the world were finding uniquely colored stones in the rivers and river beds that were being turned upside down. Since they were not really so rare or anything, they were given the term semi-precious stones ? as polishing them and cutting them to shape required a lot of skill. For those who could not afford real diamonds, these semi precious stones became the next best alternative. In fact, these became so popular that jewelers included gemstone jewelry as part of their mainstream selling items and they were studded in precious metals like Gold and Silver. This became real popular in the 1800s and that holds true even today.

In the 1930s, a whole new concept of fashion jewelry came into existence with the usage of Rhinestone in its making. Named thus as they were originally gathered from the Rhine river, Rhinestones became the natural substitute for diamonds and people from all over the world immediately fell in love with these stones. They became so popular that they found their ways into the tiaras of crowns on the heads of queens all over, and even into engagement rings of the time! The prime reason was that you could afford a much bigger rhinestone at the price of a tiny little diamond. You can read more about Rhinestones here – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinestone

If there is one person who should have a place of pride in the history of fashion jewelry, it has to be Coco Chanel. This designer-par-excellence made the use of this style of jewelry very famous, and she could be seen more often in fashion jewelry than real diamond stuff. Coco is specially remembered for making pearls fashionable. She has been listed on the Time 100, and you can read that article here – http://www.time.com/time/time100/artists/profile/chanel.html.

Coming to the modern times in the history of fashion jewelry, we come into the machine made era. Though the romantics feel that the machine has spoilt the beauty of the hand-made costume jewelry, the truth is that the machine has made fashion jewelry more affordable and has enabled people to produce enough to fuel the interest of millions of ladies from all around the world. Probably the most influential and popular fashion jewelry designer in the modern times would be Kenneth Jay Lane.

Finally, there is one thing that is very interesting and we should mention it here. Fashion jewelry is an extremely collectible item, and also acquires vintage status with time. There are several cases of vintage fashion jewelry auctions going into hundreds of thousands of dollars!

So the next time you are out buying fashion jewelry, feel happy and in fact, proud that you are out to get a product with a colorful history!

Identifying the Top Famous Loose Diamonds

September 27th, 2009

Throughout history, diamonds have always been revered because of their exquisite beauty. These diamonds are also quite expensive. It seems that the largest and most unique ones become famous. However, this is not the case of some of the top famous loose diamonds. One perfect example is the Hope Diamond.

Hope Diamond

The Hope Diamond became famous not because it is the largest. It is not even the most beautifully cut. However, this is often considered by a lot of experts as number one in the list of top famous loose diamonds. Unverified legends tell that the stone came from one of the eyes of Sita, a Hindu goddess who is also the wife of Rama. However, this legend is most probably just a work of fiction as the Hope Diamond?s twin was never found.

This diamond is 45.52 carats of fancy dark greenish blue color. It is stunningly worth more than $200,000,000 and is currently displayed at Smithsonian Natural History Museum. It has been verified to come from the Tavenier Blue Diamond, and both had a regal history of being passed on to the hands of different royals until the Hope Diamond, then known as French Blue, came into the Hope Family. The diamond was passed on to the next generation and became controversial because of various heirs were known to be fighting over the possession of this diamond.

Taylor-Burton Diamond

Another of the top famous loose diamonds once again owes its fame to controversy. This pear-shaped 69-carat diamond was bought by Cartier and christened as ?Cartier.? It was set into a necklace, which was promptly bought by Richard Burton as a fortieth birthday gift for his wife, Elizabeth Taylor, and was named by the latter as ?Taylor-Burton.? When the couple divorced, Taylor sold the diamond for $3,000,000, although some accounts claim that it was for $5,000,000. It was told that prospective buyers were allowed to view the diamond for a ?modest? fee of $2,500.

Dresden Green Diamond

Of the top famous loose diamonds, the Dresden Green Diamond is one of the few that became famous because of its color and size. Named after Saxony?s (in Germany) capital where it was on display for 200 years, this 41-carat diamond is the largest natural-occurring green diamond ever seen. Early accounts tell of how a diamond merchant named Marcus Moses tried to sell this diamond, which he got from India, to King George I who was amazed by the diamond but did not buy it.

Other accounts also tell of this diamond being dealt to Frederick Augustus I who did not buy it too. However, his son Frederick Augustus II did buy the diamond some years later from another merchant. It was then set into the Golden Fleece. It was later re-set to another Golden Fleece along with the Dresden White Diamond.

Other Diamonds

Also among the top famous loose diamonds are ones that became famous due to their color. These are the Great Chrysanthemum (golden brown with a touch of burnt orange and sienna), Conde Pink, Transvaal Blue, and Agra (light pink).

Loose Diamonds for the Holiday

September 7th, 2009

This season give her the gift that she really wants?a diamond. Almost every girl that I know would love to open up a little black velvet box to find a piece of jewelry inside, but how do you shop to get the best deal? Loose diamonds are often an affordable way to go. With a loose diamond you can save some money on the price of gold and you can let her design the jewelry that she wants. Perhaps she will choose a pendant instead of a ring.

Giving her a loose diamond can also allow her to be creative. She can design her own piece of jewelry and be proud of it when she shows it off to her friends.

One thing you can do is educate yourself about diamonds. By knowing and understanding the factors which determine a diamonds? price you can better set your budget and get maximum value for dollar.

If you are in the market for a loose diamond, don’t let all the industry jargon scare you off. Here’s a little translation on what these terms mean so next time you go into the jewelry store you can speak the same language as the sales clerk!

1. CUT. Not the shape of the stone, but the quality of its facets.

2. CLARITY. Clarity levels start at Flawless and descend from Very Very Slight (VVS) to Very Slight (VS) and Slightly Included (SI). Clarity measures the number of flaws or inclusions in a diamond.

3. CARAT. The weight of a diamond. One carat equals about 200 milligrams.

4. COLOR. Transparent diamonds (those created from 100 percent carbon) are rated on a scale from D (clear) through Z (light yellow). Grade D is the most prestigious, but, because they are so rare, natural diamonds with tints of pink, blue or purple have a cachet all their own.

We hope this has been helpful. To see example of the 4C?s and to get more in-depth information about diamonds please visit A&W Diamonds at awdiamonds.com and check out the diamond education center.
