How to Spend Little Yet Still Get Amazing Jewelry

June 10th, 2011

When you plan to spend money on jewelry, what are you looking for? Do you pick jewelry based on the price? Do you pick it based on the color? Do you determine what jewelry to get based on style? Are you concerned about it being one of a kind? Is it crucial for you to have something unique? If bizarre is something you prefer, you could really save yourself some time by only shopping for handmade jewelry. Jewelry that is mass produced for department stores is all fine and good but if you want a piece that is one of a kind, jewelry that is handmade is the way to go.

Believe it or not, one of the best ways to get handmade jewelry is to sell designs that you have put together. If your town has craft fairs and you have enough time, you should consider having your own booth. You can use these fairs as a networking opportunity. The problem is finding the time to keep up with the demand of buyers in fairs like this. But if you have a bunch of work you’re trying to unload, an arts and crafts event can be a great way to earn extra money and to meet other designers. There is the potential that you will meet a jewelry designer who likes to trade for new things and get new jewelry that way. This way you can get new handmade jewelry and not have to spend your money.

Arts Fairs and Crafts Fairs. Almost every single city and town has an arts and crafts fair. They might not be regular occurrences but make sure you go when they are held. These fairs are goldmines of one of a kind pieces. Perhaps the very best thing about jewelry at craft fairs is just how affordable it is. Lots of artists will charge lower prices at these things because they want to make names for themselves. If you buy hand crafted jewelry (or anything really) at an art fair always ask if the artist has his or her own website. It is on the website that you will find the pieces that cost more money.

If you are looking for handcrafted jewelry, you might think about just doing a Google search for jewelry designers and artists. Many people sell their wares directly to customers through individual websites. It is usually a bit more of a challenge to track down these websites, but they can be a myriad for handmade jewelry and other crafts. Another wonderful reason to purchase directly from an artist’s website is you better your chances of being able to commission the artist to design a piece just for you. Doing this offline would be incredibly expensive. Online, however, there are many deals and bargains to be had!

There are lots of ways to get homemade jewelry without having to spend money. Trading is the simplest way to do this. You can trade your own pieces of perhaps some of your time to “buy” the pieces you really like. There is no reason to only use one type of trading. Try out some different methods to see what will work. Trading is great and you might end up enjoying it enough that you turn it into a full time thing.

Hunting out for bespoke jewelry is often loads of fun but can often be really time consuming. I always find a quick search online on somewhere like ebay is usually the best place for custom jewelry

Just Diamonds

June 3rd, 2011

When it comes to proposing or getting engaged, getting a diamond ring is the one and only way to do so. It is considered to be a symbol of a man’s enduring love that he will spend a large amount on a large diamond that the woman can then show off to her friends and family – it shows that he can and will support her for the rest of her life.

This idea of giving diamond rings before marriage has been around for less than a century, however, as it was popularised entirely by Hollywood, allegedly because worldwide diamond monopoly De Beers paid off filmmakers to create a romantic image around diamonds, using the slogan ‘a diamond is forever’.

There are a lot of people who are surprised when they sell their diamonds and only get a fraction of what they originally paid for but the reality is, diamonds are not intrinsically worth very much. Worse, many diamonds come from parts of the world where the locals have been oppressed and local officials bribed just so the company could set up a diamond mine, especially in Africa.

Unjustified cost and ethical concerns are the reasons why a lot of people prefer now to use other gems in rings instead of diamonds. Just as stones like emeralds and rubies, fake diamond names like ‘diamonte’ and diamonique’ are very popular.

But there are still people who feel that you can’t beat a diamond and this is because of the real traditional feel. It’s common to be worried about how many carats the diamond is when you’re looking for a diamond ring but remember that it’s cut or the way it has been cut out of the original mined material can be more important in order for the diamond to have a pleasant appearance.

You could consider getting a guarantee that the diamond is not a De Beers conflict diamond so that no one has suffered to get it to you and you may find it’s worth buying a ring where, instead of one big diamond poking out of the top, there are many small diamonds used for pleasant effect although this is entirely subjective.

The Interesting History For Diamond Rings

May 19th, 2011

The traditional diamond rings that exemplify the love and undying commitment of two people stems from a very long, storied past that is filled with history. Once an item that only the very rich could obtain, today they can be purchased by anybody. Because there is such a colorful story behind this expression of love, you must know the origins first.

Diamonds have always been a symbol of undying love and devotion, and long lasting couplings. The idea is that diamonds are strong, enduring, and very lovely. They encapsulate the idea of the ultimate tribute of love because of what they stand for and their staying power.

Using this particular piece of jewelry to identify an engagement has been around for a very long time. In the days of opulent wealth and royalty, Kings would give their intended these symbols to signify their intentions. At one time, only the very rich could take advantage of the meanings behind them. It is much different today, where anybody can buy this type of engagement ring.

Diamonds have always been viewed as the ultimate in status symbol; sometimes more so than a large house or a fancy car. Women who wore many of them on their fingers were viewed as well looked after, and married or engaged to a man who was very rich. In todays world, they are not as exclusively limited to rich people; anyone can buy them.

Once considered an exclusive purchase, diamond rings became very affordable in the early part of the twentieth century. This is because the supply of them was overabundant, and they could be marketed for much less than before. This was due, in part, to the discovery of diamond mines in certain parts of the world in the late nineteenth century.

Some people began buying a lot of diamonds because they felt that at some point, the value of them would rise. This made a lot of sense because one never knows when the mines will be emptied; making the availability weak once again. They remain very exclusive, however they can be attained by those who want them.

One of the main reasons a woman wears a diamond engagement ring on the ring finger of her left hand makes perfect sense. It has been said that there is a big blood vein that runs from that finger all the way to the heart. If this is so, then it would make perfect sense to put a symbol of love and devotion onto this finger.

Diamond rings hold such a large history; they have certainly stood the test of time. They are the main symbol for the love a man feels for a woman, and their need to show the world by how big the ring can be. The market for this jewelry has drastically opened within the last century; what was once an item only the very rich could afford, now is something that anyone can manage to buy.

Glorious Eternity Rings in a Wonderful Metal: Platinum

May 16th, 2011

With an approximate rarity of five times that of gold and a timeless beauty, it’s easy to see why platinum is the most valuable metal in the world, and the elite material when it comes to creating and wearing fine jewelry.

Platinum contains a certain amount of other materials naturally, but for a piece to be considered platinum it must be refined to a purity of 90% or better. As one might imagine, with such a valuable metal as platinum, the standards for determining what can be credibly sold and advertised as platinum jewelry are very strict. A piece at this level would be stamped as 900 platinum; higher quality pieces, like most of the items sold here, are stamped “950 Plat”, which indicates that the mix is 95% pure platinum.

Platinum does not tarnish, but will develop a patina over time which many feel actually improves the appearance of their platinum jewelry. Platinum is also a denser metal than most used in jewelry, which makes it stronger and accounts for the substantially heavier feel of a platinum piece. This superior strength also ensures that, while the shank of gold ring will wear away and thin out over time, platinum will hold its structure.

To properly care for your platinum jewelry, it’s best to follow the same general guideline for cleaning gold jewelry: don’t risk damaging or ruining your jewelry with a randomly-purchased jewelry cleaner or other harsh chemicals. Use liquid soap and a soft cloth for home cleaning, and when in doubt have the cleaning done professionally.

Decoding Fine Jewelry Purchasing: The 4 Cs Defined

May 1st, 2011

First-time diamond shopper? This guide will help you learn the basics of everything you need to know about choosing diamond jewelry.

Diamonds are formed by carbon atoms that, after being subjected to intense heat and pressure within the earth over a long period of time, crystallize into a specific arrangement. The Mohs scale, used to measure the hardness of different substances, is a 1 to 10 scale with talc rating a 1 and diamond representing 10. The next hardest substance is corundum, which is the main component comprising rubies and sapphires. However, with a rating of 9, corundum is significantly behind the diamond on this scale.

Diamonds have many particular characteristics that make them special; in addition to their unusual beauty, diamonds are the hardest naturally-occurring material on Earth.

Diamond cut is the most important factor of all. A poorly planned or executed cutting technique can permanently ruin a top-quality diamond, and conversely a lower quality diamond can be exponentially improved by cutting the stone very well. Cut is often confused with shape, the form into which the diamond is cut.

The next, color, is one of the more detectable features of diamonds for non-jewelers to observe, although it is difficult for even the most skilled eye to distinguish between loose diamonds fewer than two color grades apart, or three grades apart for a stone that has been set. This is why diamond colors are often given as ranges.

The next of the four Cs is clarity, which is the evaluation of a diamond’s internal and external flaws. Generally speaking, flaws inside a stone are called inclusions while flaws on the surface are known as blemishes. However, for the purposes of grading, gemological labs refer to all diamond flaws as inclusions.

Finally, there’s carat, the unit of measure indicating the weight of the diamond. This is the easiest to see and simplest to understand of the four Cs.

What is a diamond? Learn this and more by visiting the diamond & fine jewelry experts atEternity Rings and Bands! Their in depth jewelry website offers a number of wonderful rings and an education section featuring a diamond clarity chart & many other important resources.
