Rifat Hadziahmetovic a Montenegrin criminal has been extradited from Spain to Japan in order to face charges relating to the theft of jewellery. Tokyo prosecutors have charged him with stealing a tiara worth an estimated 284 million yen (2.18 million) from a Tokyo based store.
The robbery, which took place in Tokyo’s upmarket Ginza district way back in June 1007 sees him and his ‘Pink Panther’ gang members all facing charges after they were alleged to have sprayed tear gas into the eyes of the shop assistants before proceeding to rob the shop escaping the scene on bikes.
His arrest came as part of several big blows to the Pink Panther gang who at one time seemed to be a fairly uncatchable gang mainly originating from Yugoslavia. The gang stole jewellery and watches over a long period of time.
The gang is said to have stolen jewellery worth hundreds of millions of pounds and in over thirty different locations worldwide over a period of at least ten years.
The gang is also thought to have stolen some very valuable gems from a different Ginza jewellery store in 2004.
The accused Mr Hadziahmetovic was finally arrested in Cyprus in 2009 after a warrant for his arrest was issued due to his stealing of valuable watched in Spain- which is where he was sent. His extradition was then sought by Japan
The other suspect named Radovan Jelusic was also arrested in May when he was found in Rome attempting to use a fake Croatian passport. He had been wanted in Cyprus, Japan and a whole host of other countries.
The Pink Panther gang were given their name after British police detectives discovered a diamond ring hidden within a jar of face cream mimicking the incident in the 1963 film starring Peter Sellers.
Designer costume jewellery is very popular as it can be hard to tell a real diamond from a fake. Silver fashion jewellery is set to be a huge trend this season.
