Live performance from 1987 in honour of 750 years Berlin. Part 6. shirleybassey.wordpress.com About the dress Dame Shirley is wearing for this performance (from Ian): This gown was designed by Sara Perceval around 1983, Sara did all of the lace chiffon gowns for DSB in the 90′s. We call it the Cockeral Gown for obvious reasons. The gown was worn at Blazers in London in 1984, on British tv in 1987 and in Berlin in 1987 and several other occasions in the late 80′s. It was sadly destroyed in a fire in the early 90′s! Send In The Clowns Written by Stephen Sondheim. Released on the 1975 album Good, Bad But Beautiful. Another recording not quite as good as the original is on the 1984 album I Am What I Am. Live recordings have been released on the album Live In Japan ’77, and on the videoYou Ain’t Heard Nothing Yet. Additionally Shirley Bassey has performed this song live in some TV shows 1975/76, and again in the 1980′s. He’s well known and loved for his quite complicated and not so accessible, but beautiful writing. He got his first big break when he was hired to write lyrics to Leonard Bernstein’s score for “West Side Story”. Shirley Bassey has performed songs also from other Sondheim musicals: “West Side Story” (1957), “Gypsy” (1959) and “Follies” (1971). “Send in the Clowns” has been performed by many …

@colormemichael I will just add, I have watched and listened to Barbra perform this song a hundred times. I never understood it, until I saw Dame Shirley perform it. Barbra does do a great job of this song, I like the inclusion of the verse about it sounding cliche. But honestly, vocally she doesn’t hold a candle to Dame Shirley’s ability. I love them both.
@colormemichael . I can tell you are a loyal fan of Barbra. I get it. I have loved her all of my life too and always thought she was the best, no question about it. I was even blessed to see her live. However, about 4 months ago I stumbled on to Dame Shirley. She is phenomenal! In my opinion Dame Shirley is the greatest vocal entertainer, based on vocal strength, charm, warmth, longevity and performance. What Barbra does best is acting. Even Bab’s mom’s favorite singer was Shirley Bassey.
i love you shirley. you are the one and only. kisses and embraces from laurence (clifton, bristol)
Sweety voice, always good and tender. Thanks
A truly GREAT song, Miss Bassey lifts it to heights, not even Angels can better. Yet, another masterpiece by the master. That voice, expressions, mannerisms, delivery are incomparable. The best. Ron OZ
One may think Barbra Streisand is a better but singer but Shirely Bassey is a much better entertainer.
Streisand was once asked who she thought was a great female singer. Her answer? Shirley Bassey.

Where are the new comers? Can anyone (new singers) that is this good? Or this is a one-time luck/chance for us?
Not that other singers are not good, but Dame Shirley is so superb is hard to believe…
I think this is the best she’s ever sung Send in the Clowns. Nice, genuine emotion there.
